Substance Abuse Counselling

Substance abuse is commonly defined as compulsive engagement with a particular behaviour or substance despite persistent negative consequences.  One in 20 Australians struggle with drug and alcohol problems. Unfortunately, some have tried many times to be free of their  abuse of particular drugs or alcohol.

Signs of substance abuse include:

  • Physical symptoms such as cravings, increased tolerance and withdrawal,
  • Impaired control leading to repetitive, unsuccessful efforts in reducing and/or abstaining from the behaviour or substance,
  • Social changes such as avoidance of important relationships or activities that the person used to enjoy and
  • Risky behaviour and ignoring negative consequences.

Despite how common it is, the term “drug and alcohol abuse” carry a lot of stigma behind it. In popular culture, drug abuse or alcohol abuse have long been looked down upon and conceptualized as an absence of will-power. Research has proven that drug and alcohol problems have both a biological and environmental basis. In other words, it’s not just a matter of will-power! However, this shame-based rhetoric often makes it more difficult for those who are struggling to reach out and get support to be free of their problem.
